Distributed fibre optic sensing for sinkhole early warning: experimental study

چکیده
This paper presents experimental work aimed at proving the feasibility of using distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) as an early warning system for sinkhole detection. The 1g experiments were conducted a plane-strain trapdoor and scaled to provide insight into formation in sand, which DFOS cables laid selected depths. data are compared with geomechanics soil displacement, recorded particle image velocimetry (PIV). It was demonstrated that exhibits signature strain profile location sinkhole, allowing be located data. Differences PIV are, however, apparent – notably magnitudes. Nonetheless, it is possible estimate size depth Using preliminary study development zone subsidence, range relative densities, then predict extent damage ground surface. Such results show potential incorporation construction critical infrastructure enable detection thus opportunity remedial action prevent catastrophic failures.

Integrity Testing of Pile Cover Using Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing
The integrity of cast-in-place foundation piles is a major concern in geotechnical engineering. In this study, distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) cables, embedded in a pile during concreting, are used to measure the changes in concrete curing temperature profile to infer concrete cover thickness through modelling of heat transfer processes within the concrete and adjacent ground. A field tr...

The nation faces a growing concern that terrorists or state actors will resort to the use of chemical or biological warfare agents against military or civilian targets. The primary defensive action available for this threat is to detect the deadly agents before they contact their intended victims. Given advance warning, people can evacuate a contaminated area, administer prophylactic medication...

Currently the technology is mainly used for perimeter monitoring of utility assets and third party intervention monitoring on buried pipelines. In the oil & gas s...
متن کاملSearching for storm water inflows in foul sewers using fibre-optic distributed temperature sensing.
A major drawback of separate sewer systems is the occurrence of illicit connections: unintended sewer cross-connections that connect foul water outlets from residential or industrial premises to the storm water system and/or storm water outlets to the foul sewer system. The amount of unwanted storm water in foul sewer systems can be significant, resulting in a number of detrimental effects on t...
متن کاملFibre Optic Acoustic Sensing for Intrusion Detection Systems
In this study, acoustic emissions (AEs) were detected through a variety of different flooring materials using a fibre Bragg grating (FBG). The AEs were generated using a low velocity impact test, and by footstep. The acoustic vibrations cause a strain in the optical fibre, and hence alter the wavelength reflected by the FBG. This strain induced wavelength shift can then easily be detected by co...
